This course examines how chronic stress, financial stress, depression and legal profession stresses trigger and contribute to alcohol, substance abuse and gambling in attorneys. This program discusses various impairments identified by lawyers caused by stress and the legal practice. This program examines the growing concern for attorney wellbeing as an industry-wide issue for law firms, law schools and bar associations. This program explores the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and American Bar Association Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs extensive study on the rates of substance abuse and other mental health concerns among attorneys and discusses the findings. This program examines the work/life balance which has lawyers spending little time for themselves, their families and their social activities. It examines how to have a career and a life and what is work/life balance? Why is work/life balance so important? How do I achieve this balance? The conclusion is to set guidelines for a path of balance that will benefit an attorney’s life and career knowing that careers last for decades and that work/life balance is not always possible. The program examines an attorney’s ethical obligations when confronted with a colleague’s alcohol or substance abuse problem and the attorney discipline process relating to alcohol and substance abuse, and gambling: and examines alternative and diversion programs in various states.
